I suggest you check two things.

First, when you import images into a catalog, you can copy the originals into your catalog file (Inside Catalog) or leave them where they are and let CO7 store a link to the file (Current Location). No need to say you should use Current Location.

Second, you can slim down you catalog by creating smaller (but not to small) preview cache files. The default is 2560 px, but smaller depending on your screen size might fit better. See Preferences > Image tab > Cache.
