IQ 180 record to card and computer simultaneously?

Postby Ross Floyd » Sun Mar 02, 2014 6:50 am

I am on a job with a photographer new to Medium format. He has stated that his Canon allows him to shoot while tethered simultaneously to a card and his computer (possibly with the canon captures software).

I have never had a reason to test this.

Is this possible with the IQ180?

Is it a good idea?

Can it be detrimental?

Please advise.

Best,

Ross

Hi Ross,

This is not possible when shooting tethered to Capture One, whatever camera or digital back you use.

Ross,

As Paul said, capturing to both the computer and the CF card while using Capture One is not possible regardless of which camera system is being used.

Your photographer has been using Canon EOS Utilities for tethered capture which does allow writing the images to card and computer.

The right way to handle this situation is to be making backups to an external drive every 20-30 minutes (or whenever there is downtime between different setups/shots so that you have multiple copies of the files at any given time.

Thank you both. I backed up regularly during the shoot. He was happy with this solution.

Usually I do not want it because I love the renaming and organizing functions of CO1 but I would appreciate that option, as I sometimes have a shooting with expensive FX or very short time window (weather conditions, celebrities etc) and it happened in the worst moment that a connection dropped and a picture was lost, which can be very expensive thing.

With a canon some people run the Eos Utility and then import to CO1 from a hot folder.. to much hassle for me but a workaround. For canon, of course

To add a little clarification here, there are a couple primary reasons this feature is is not available on the backs.

First and most important we are using a slightly different process when generating the files between shooting to card and tethered that allows us to transfer the files much faster. This is one of the reasons tethering with a Phase One back can be faster than tethering with a DSLR despite the larger files size.

To both transfer to computer and save to card in practical terms heavily limits the speed to which you can do both at the same time since you have to account for both situations. This would slow down transfer to both the card and computer and introduce slower capture rates and more buffering.

In workflow terms I have always though this was a bad Idea... what you have on the computer doesn't match what is on the card. A better method is auto back up on the computer side using something like Chronosync.
