The answer is unfortunately no.
The Phase One 645AF does supports film but from the 645DF and all future version will be digital only.

Why? Why not continue supporting film. This is a really silly move by phase/mamiya.

Why did Phase/Mamiya make this choice? Supporting a film back would be really quite simple.

Hasselblad on the other hand is re-introducing film capability with their new body.

I read this post after my previous post:

Jon wrote:Film backs are not supported on the DF (only 645AF). We could not continue to support film backs and still make the communication and timing performance increases for use with digital backs.

Is the problem that the electronics in the film backs are too slow?
Why not just make a film back that will work with the new electronics?

Maybe not enough market for a new film back......

Just for clarity Hasselblad's H4X does support film backs as well as Phase One, Leaf, and Mamiya digital backs but the H4X does NOT support Hasselblad H4 digital backs. The H4D-31, H4D-40, H4D-50, H4D-60 do not support film backs.

Not arguing, just making sure the information is clear since it is a bit confusing.

All Phase One, Leaf, and Mamiya backs that work on a DF also are supported on the Phase One AF which does support film, as does the RZ Pro IID which also supports any DF-compatible Phase/Leaf/Mamiya back.

So there are several options for Phase/Leaf/Phase owners to shoot film.

But I think it's been clear for many years the focus moving forward - of all major camera companies - is on digital not film.

Kudos to Mamiya for still producing the RZ. However it would be great if they made a dedicated viewfinder or two for using the RZ with a digital back. It would be particularly nice if the prism or finder could be made with a focus assist or at least a built in magnifier. It would also be very nice to have an adapter that permits offsetting the digital sensor a bit. Would be ideal for fashion. Keep the face more at the center of the image circle.

It is however sad that film support cannot be maintained on the newer bodies that have better focusing and other features.

While camera manufactures are focused on digital.... film still has a look that digital cannot produce.
Most of all digital is confined to sub 645 formats... quite limiting lens wise. Bigger image circles... better images.

I am own Mamiya 645 AFD III with Mamiya DM22 (Leaf Aptus-II 5) back and also Mamiya RZ67 PRO IID. I feel good that I shoot film on both these cameras more and more these days although I LOVE my digital back. Nothing feelings like developing your own 120 rolls, scan them and say WOW when you see huge 6x7 negatives and beautiful depth of field. I know many photographers who are discovering film again as digital can't produce the look of film.

Thank you Mamiya for still making great film cameras like RZ67 Pro IID and 645 AFD III.
