Capture One PRO 11 5d Mark IV RAW Import Problem

Postby NNN636514531318806334 » Mon Nov 26, 2018 9:21 pm

I have shot on Canon 5d Mark IV RAW file. I did white balance adjustment and some saturation and contrast adjustments IN-CAMERA under Canon's portrait mode profile. After Importing all CR2 files to Capture One 11 , all adjustments are not present. Capture One displays them as as pure RAW. This is only seen in Capture One Pro 11 Windows.

When I import the images on my Mac using Capture One Pro 11, it properly displays the RAW files as I shot them - I even compared the images displayed on my monitor to that on the back of my camera. They are very similar!

What am I doing wrong with the import process in Windows? Why does it not display the RAW file as I shot them ?

As far as I know only native camera manufacture software will take into account the in camera image adjustments you make for CR2/RAW files. White Balance adjustments should be reflected in Capture One, but not saturation & contrast adjustments.

If you are seeing the in-camera adjustments just as they appear in the camera then the chances are you are seeing the jpg file embedded in the RAW file at that point of viewing and with no further edits applied to to the source file.

If you are seeing something else, as in your Windows import, then you are likely seeing an edited version of the file with some modification set up t be applied during import. This would be normal, especially for a RAW file.

There are so many possible variables here - including the different hardware and setup possibilities alongside different settings in the software involved - that to suggest anything more would be guesswork and probably not very helpful.

You could compare the two results and check for edits applied to each.

cdc's comment is very significant in the context of your question.

However remember also that White balance values, for a RAW file, are not permanent when passed from the camera, that being one of the many big benefits of shooting RAW.

Thank you for the replies. I completely understand that I'm looking at the JPG file on first view on my iMac - thus reflecting how I took it on my camera. My point is - this makes for a great starting point for me to edit. I have made some adjustments in-camera (contrast, saturation, skin-tone adjustment to be more specific). After I bring the RAW file to Capture One 11 for Windows, they are all gone.

And going back to my original concern, all my in-camera adjustments are PRESENT when I bring it up on Capture One 11 for Mac.

I want to be able to see how I can fix this or correct this on Capture One 11 on Windows PC. I know some people might say just do it on your iMac then. I wish I can but our workflow requires using Windows and Mac.

Thank you again for all the replies.

Seeings how Capture One does not recognize the in camera adjustments you make I don't see how this could be happening. I think something else is going on. How are you importing your images into Capture One? Do you have a different style, auto setting, or Base Characteristics being applied to the images on one computer but not the other? Is it possibly a monitor issue?

I also use both Mac & PC's would you be willing to upload a CR2 file so I can see how they open on my machines?

Sure, how do I send it to you or upload here?

You'd have to upload it to dropbox, google drive, or some other hosting site and provide a link.

I imagine that the Mac version is simply defaulting to using the jpeg preview that's embedded in the Raw file as its display image.

As others have said, in-camera settings (with the possible exception of WB) are meaningless to Capture One - in-camera saturation of (say) 4 would work in DPP, but a 4 on the Cap One Saturation slider will give a completely different result, because they don't even work in the same way (Capture One's Saturation tool is a combined "smart" Saturation and Vibrance tool - Canon's is a very basic tool in comparison); and the arbitrary amount of saturation Canon ascribes to a value of 4, is entirely different to Phase One's decision about what its 4 will look like.
