Strange problem, raw seems cropped without any adjustments

Postby NNN636758402631275959 » Tue Oct 29, 2019 8:56 pm

Hello everybody, I have a strange problem.

Let me try to explain in english (it is not my native language).

First: CP1 version 12.1.3 on Windows 10.
I copied files (raw and corresponding jpeg) from my SD-Card to a folder on the computer. Then I start a new session and import this folder and it's files to this session.

Now the strange thing: I photographed my motor bike and there is little space between one of the rear mirrors and the top of the image. With the jpeg file (transformed in camera) the space between the mirror and the top of the image is wider than on the raw. Same with the bottom of the image. As if the raw file is slightly cropped.

Does anybody here knows an explanation?

If I open the raw file in let's say Affinity Photo, the space is wider, too. Only raw in Capture One seems to be "cropped"

Here is a Link to two screenshots, one of the jpeg, one of the raw, absolutely no other adjusments made.

Kind regards

Built in lens automatic correction.

C1 may take a different opinion about which parts of the image are acceptable after correction compared to the camera's jpg interpretation.

You can override the suggested crop.

What is the camera?

Hi Grant,

thanks for replying.

The camera is a Fuji X-T2. How can I override the suggested crop?

Thanks

If yo go to the lens Correction tool, you can drag the distortion slider down to zero.

(If you don't want Capture One to apply default lens corrections on import, you can click the ... on the Lens Correction tool, and choose Disable Default Lens Correction. That will stop it being applied on future imports but it won't affect images that have been imported already.)

But... have a look at the effect of reducing the slider to zero. It may be that without the correction, you get barrel or pincushion distortion especially at wide angles. Or it may be that you are happy without the correction.

To start with check the Lens profile that is being applied by the Lens tool.

If it shows "Manufacturer Profile" (or your local language equivalent) then manufacturer data supplied by the Lens/Body combination should be expected. One might assume that would match the jpg ... but possibly not.

If it has rather complete lens name displayed then that may well be a Phase assessed adjustment based on Lab tests with Phase derived correction values and pixel discard decisions to provide a starting point avoiding what is considered to be excessive distortion or other other factors.

You may also find a "Generic" adjustment or perhaps "Generic (Pincushion)" although usually those are only used for lenses which have no known dedicated support.

Bear in mind that the adjustments applied by correction may cover more than just distortion.
