Importing an additional file...everything else disappears

Postby NNN636364181394546668 » Sun Feb 10, 2019 3:05 pm

I have been happily working on a catalogue which I created last week.

Today I shot a photograph that I wanted to add to this catalogue, another RAW file to a catalogue of RAWs.

I selected "Import Images..." and a window popped up showing all the RAW images in the directory (same as before when I created it). I selected the image I just added to the directory.

Now my catalogue in the browser window shows just that one file
How do I get back the other images?

Thanks

Where were you importing from?

Just need to be sure that the fact you also had the opportunity to import a lot of images that you had already imported is not suggesting that you are trying to re-import from the location to which you already imported before.

Which leads to the second question - where are you importing to? The same folder as you imported to previously?

Has the import created a new collection for that specific import activity?

What happens if you select the All Images option in the library tab?

It could be because "Recent Imports" is automatically selected by default for an import (Import window -> Import to -> Collection : recent imports only). This option shows you then only the last picture(s) imported. If you want to see all, go to "All images" or, for seeing those in a recent folder, select the folder.

From the SD card

No, I just selected one file

Yes

No, I still have only one catalog file in the directory

What happens if you select the All Images option in the library tab?

I didn't want to try that because I was worried it may overwrite the work I had already done.

I select File->Import Images...
I have copied the RAW file to the directory I am using.
Source points to that directory, which has that and many other files.

Import to Destination set to "Current Directory"

Collection set to "Recent Imports Only". The other selections give me an exclamation mark in a triangle.

I think I've done what you suggest.

Also to note, the thumbnail doesn't have the filename under it, whereas all other catalogues do.

I opened up the cocatalog file.

Everything seems to be there:
190130PoolToHome.cocatalogdb Adjustments Cache

In Adjustments I see 3 comask files which indeed is the number of files in the catalogue on which I worked.

Have you seen this short tutorial about creating a catalogue and importing images to it?

https://learn.phaseone.com/capture-one/ ... =tutorials

If not it may be a useful primer.

The example imports the images to locations INSIDE the catalogue file structure (known as 'Managed') but if you wish to store the original image files outside the catalogue, leaving them where they are if they are already on a disk or saving them to disk if they are from a memory card, there are only a couple of alternative options to select on the import screen. Otherwise the process is the same.

Of course you can also just import everything to the same place and create and organise folders and albums and so on later.

I would suggest becoming comfortable with this concept before going much further. It is basically what you are already doing (I think) but you may run a risk of becoming confused where there is no need to be confused.

I write that from experience having dived into C1 when I first tried it as if it was the application I was using at that time. They were very similar in the way they worked (C1 Session functionality rather than catalogues) but I failed to appreciate how much more was available in C1 in terms of image management options and partly wasted a few months of benefits before I recognised the need to properly understand what I could (and should) do now that I was ready to shift allegiance to C1 being my primary converter and editor.

There are more tutorials that can expand on the concept and use but feeling OK with the core process (or the non-managed, files stored externally option.) will make it easier to gain a comfortable understanding of the options.

Thanks. Will at more tutorials. Though not sure I have done something drastically wrong.

My current problem is to recover the two files I've now lost; the data seems to be there, just hidden [from me].

I've always been wary about s/w that controls saving for you. I dove into C1 because it seems to be the way everything is going nowadays. Luminar, which I have been using until now has gone this way in the latest version. But as their s/w has proved buggy, I basically left them. Also C1 handles mask much better.

However, and perhaps it's my age, I like the warm feeling of having a file for each photograph I produce, that I can touch, backup, and most importantly, continue working on over time.

In the Library tool in your catalog, the top item is Catalog Collections, and within that you should see All Images (which shows you all the images in your catalog). If you select All Images, do you see the pictures you are missing?

Yay!!! It's a miracle. They're all back :-) Thanks Ian!!!

I see. Each time a imported, it separates them out, and I can view each set of imports separately.

What I am still missing are the file names under each thumbnail.

Thanks.

In the Drop down menu system ...

View > Browser Labels > choose the option(s) you prefer.

Got them back!

Changed view->browser->customise browser

Not intuitive what the sizes from S to XL are referring.

Menachem

There's a brand new webinar about using catalogs, just posted on the Capture One YouTube channel today. Worth an hour of your time, I suggest.
