How to create a black and white image with splash effect

Postby NN635984202794584743UL » Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:06 pm

Hi,

This question was probably asked and answered before but I could not find it in the forum.

How can I create/convert a color picture into a black and white picture with splash effect (only specific objects retain their original color ex: red flower but black and white background)

Thanks
Michel

More than one way. If the object you want to remain coloured is an easy one to draw a mask on, then

(a) create a new layer

(b) draw the mask (and you can use the feather mask and refine mask tools to improve it if you want)

(c) right click on the layer and choose invert layer

(d) reduce the saturation slider on that layer to zero.

If the object in question is not so easy to draw a mask on (perhaps several red flowers) ...

(e) use the advanced tab of the colour editor and select the colour you want to retain. Check the show selected colour range option and refine things until you have got the things you want only, then turn that option off again.

(f) click the ... button on the cooler editor tool, and choose the option to create a masked layer from the selection. C1 will take a few moments, but then create the layer.

(g) select that layer and then do (b), (c) and (d) above.

There are 3 included Presets that each provide a starting point for achieving this effect using the Color Editor.

Red, Green and Blue starting points.

They can be used on the "Background" or you can apply them to a Layer. (For some reason you will probably see a message about only able to apply "partially" to a layer because the preset uses the "Basic" color editor. As far as I can tell it does not use the basic color editor and it can be applied successfully so accept the message and continue.)

You may need to fine tune the colour selection for you specific image using the colour wheel selector or maybe also make use of the layer masking to exclude area of the selected colour to tune the composition to the result you require r tune the opacity of the result.

There is a tutorial video that may be useful for understanding the general principles and options for using styles and presets in Capture One - though not necessarily specifically for your colour isolation purpose.
