XF (in)compatibility with older Mamiya lenses

Postby gerald.d » Fri Jul 10, 2015 1:21 pm

Hi -

Digital Transitions report that the Mamiya 80/1.9 will not mount to the XF.

Please could you advise what other legacy lenses will not mount to the XF?

I am particularly interested with regards to the following, which I own and use (all manual lenses)

Mamiya 24mm f/4.0 Fisheye
Mamiya 50mm f/4.0 Shift
Mamiya 120mm, 150mm, 200mm and 300mm f/2.8's

Thanks in advance,

Gerald.

The article Gerald.D references is here:
http://www.digitaltransitions.com/event ... ly-22-2015

Quick update to this article, we have discovered the cause of the incompatibility between the 80/1.9 and the XF. This lens has a slightly protruding lip around the rear element. It does not appear to have any function but is a fraction of a mm further back into the mount than with other lenses of this generation.

We've had the ring reduced down here in NYC and it is now mounting and operating normally. We need to do more testing to be sure, but I believe this is a complete fix to the issue.

Dear Doug,

This message is more to PhaseOne than to you.

I really appreciate your contribution to this and other forums dealing with P1 products.

DT is "responsible" for selling a lot of PhaseOne equipment well beyond the US border, and PhaseOne should thank you for that!

I recognize that DT, after spending time and money on modification of lenses, cannot give away free advice to the "whole world".

This is PhaseOne's responsibility, but they are not recognizing is as their responsibility.

The situation is very unfortunate for many XF users, and I myself specifically purchased the 80mm/f1.9, 24mm Fish Eye and 50mm Shift for use on the XF.

It has not been possible to get any info on the modification from dealers here in Europe.

Having failed to find a source for the modification, I opened a support case through my dealer a month ago when I got my XF/IQ380, but so far there is only silence from PhaseOne.

I think the time now is well overdue for PhaseOne to issue a compatibility list of legacy lenses, like the list compiled fro the DF+, and to comment on what can and cannot be done to modify lenses.

I think most users assumed that the compatibility was the same as for DF+.

Now, I do not dare to mount any MF lens on my XF in fear of damaging a very expensive camera.

Having spent north of 60k$ on camera, back and lenses, I think PhaseOne should not just ignore me and refuse to answer what seems to be a simple question.

Best regards

Trond

Ulf: It would be nice to add to this article picture of modified ring. Image with "Then the part painted in red in (Fig 4) will have to be removed. We recommend this to be done by a professional expert." isn't quite clear.

Hi

We have not previously had any confusion about this as if you look at one of this type of lenses, you see a ledge around the ring.
At the area which is marked of on the picture, it simply needs to be removed.
But we'll see if we can update this with a pre and post modification picture.

I have modified 2 lenes the 80mm 1.9 and the 35mm 3.5.

There is a flange which prevents the lens from mounting. It is a simple process of marking where the flange interferes, taking it off with jewelers screwdriver, using a dremel tool to cut away the flange, repainting or coating the piece, letting it dry then re mounting on the lens. I could do a write up on it if there is interest. It does ioen up a large number of lenses that give a nice look so it is worth it.
