Copy METADATA across multiple images?

Postby AndyN » Fri Feb 08, 2019 12:35 pm

The man in the Keywords and Metadata video says:
Quote: "Metadata can be copied across multiple images in the same way as the keywords tool"

This is the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVzUFYhcitU

I'd love to know how!
In fact, if I can't do it, I'll have no alternative but to go back to Lightroom (something I really don't want to do).

I've tried Copy Adjustments, and I've tried copying with the metadata Adjustments Clipboard.
Neither appear to work.

Any input would be appreciated.

Which metadata values are you seeking to copy?

Can you copy to ONE variant/image but not to more than one?

Hello Grant, thanks for your interest.
It's mainly Title and Description in IPTC Content.
Just description would probably be enough.

Yes - but it's prohibitively slow.

OK.

Firstly it should not be prohibitively slow at all but I think this may be some sort of Mac issue that affects some people and not others and could be to do with parameters and plists or similar and maybe the specific version of the OS - but not being a Mac user I'm not the person to help.

I would suggest you raise the same question in the Mac section of the forum where you may get more visitors.

Secondly one has to ask whether you have the "Edit all selected variants" toggle feature set to ON. If not (as you may know but I'm not going to assume you do) then the copy and apply (or just apply from clipboard) will only happen for the first image in the selected set.

If nothing suggested here makes any difference create a Support Case and have the Support Team assess your log files.

I only meant it's slow if I have to paste to every file individually.

I was unaware of a Mac section to this forum. If I should be addressing my questions there, may I ask where it can be found?

The three little rectangles are orange if that's what you mean, but it doesn't make any difference how they're set. I simply cannot find a way to copy and paste metadata to several clips at once in Capture One.

Is there a page or tutorial that actually shows how to do it?

It's well and good for the guy in the video to say you can do it, but I've spent half a day trying vainly to do something that in Lightroom (or Bridge) you simply select the pictures, type the info into the box, and it appears in all of them!

I really appreciate your help, but this is getting beyond a joke.

Hi Andy,

viewforum.php?f=75

The Mac centric forum area - usually to be found as the next forum listed below the Workflow and Common Photography Exploration section.

So you have "edit all selected variants" toggle on. That's good.

In general for "Edit all selected variables" there are two approaches.

Some fields (Rating, Colour tag - anything with a simple fixed value) will be updated for all images as you expect.
However some entries - especially anything that involves variables as far as recalculations of related values rather than just a simple addition of subtraction - may be handled by applying the edits to one image and then using copy to clipboard and paste to apply the change made to the currently selected image (the "Primary" image in this context) to all of the others selected.

You can do that as a Copy to clipboard, check that you have the field you want and then "paste" or as an immediate copy and paste with no intermediate step if you are sure you will get just what you want - as is likely the case here.

There are arrow icons to use or hot key combinations for direct keyboard operation if you prefer.

Using the Metadata tool (as I assume you are for this particular task) on the top row of the tool there is an "?" and clicking that will allow you to drill down through a number of pages to some quite detailed options for using the tool's facilities.

Next to that is a 2 way arrow that allows you to select mete date entries to copy to the Clip Board with options to immediately copy and paste with no further selection and paste option screens to interrupt the process. Hover over the icon for key combination advice.

It would probably also be worth investigating the clipboard tool and the options it offers just to be sure you can plan to always get just the options you want updated.

There are some other approaches to updating metadata fields using the filters tool but I don't think the concept is particularly practical or appropriate for your purposes. Great for Country or City for example but not so appropriate for something that is likely to be a phrase or sentence.

Does this help at all?

You can copy metadata via the clipboard as any other adjustment. Note, however, that after copying the information from the source image, you have to manually tick the checkbox for the metadata adjustment to apply to the destination image.

You must do this before you apply the adjustment.

Quicker is the double arrow symbol of the metadata tool itself. This will ensure that you only copy metadata and now other adjustments, and you do not have to tick checkboxes, although you may, on the metadata clipboard.

I just checked this on CO Pro 12.0.1 on macOS and it works well. I don't know which version and platform you are on.

Thank you Grant and Paul for your patient attempts to help me with this.
I'm happy to say that the light finally came on and now that I can copy and paste metadata across multiple images, I'm able to stick with Capture One.

Instead of searching for "Paste Metadata in Capture One" and the like, I searched for "Copy and Paste in Capture One", and this short tutorial (link below) clarified the situation for me. (I'd been doing it completely wrong).

Thank you once again for your help, and please accept my apologies for being so dim!
