Importing woes on C1-11 OSX High Sierra

Postby NN635625356763119273UL » Fri Dec 01, 2017 12:33 pm

Dear forum,
I am a newbie to C1-11, have been using Aperture and Lr6 and have a database of around 20K pictures.
After a trial I recently purchased C1 as I liked the editing features.

During the time I did not import large sets of pictures as I assumed that this would be quite OK.

I could not have been wrong more. I have been working for days to get the picture database into C1.
Initially I started from scratch and exported the originals from Lr6 into a separate folder and tried to import. The first thing I noticed was that many pictures became dated to 1970. This, while the EXIF information of said images clearly showed the correct date, both in the metadata pane as well as external inspection of the images.

Then I tried to import the Lr6 catalog, same result. I tried various options importing into Album, Session->album.
All the same result, but another problem started to occur.
The system started to import less and less pictures. At some point it thought that 893 out of 20K was enough. I assumed this was a duplicate cancellation problem so I stared with a clean target disk and a new catalog each time. To no avail.

Cleaned everything up and tried again. The last attempt seemed to work (into session) but after 6 hours and about 4000 photos it seemed to stop. The progress bar was still there but no photos were being imported anymore. I canceled this process after 12 hours.
Importing is very slow and finding out after 5-6 hours that only 4000 have been imported and then come to a grinding halt does not bode well.

Though being a noob to C1 I am a SW developer (and database specialist) and amateur photographer and have been at this for over twenty-five years. Used Aperture, Lightroom and now C1 (I hope)
My Mac is pretty powerful MBP-2014 Retina, 2.5Gi7 16GB Ram, 1TB SDD (Aura) OSX High Sierra FS:APFS

There must be something wrong. If this would be a typical experience I would fear for the future of C1.
I did not read similar issues in this forum, so I must be doing something wrong, but what?

Any insight from anyone who cares to enlighten me?

Kind regards

If I were you I would create a Support Case and discuss this with the Capture One technical support team who will likely have had broader exposure to the many different hardware/firmware/software combined issues than forum members.

That's not to say that forum members cannot help - possibly quite the opposite as many as very helpful. But there is no guarantee that they will be dropping in in good time to help you having had (and resolved) experiences similar to yours.

The weekend approaches - personally I would not delay with the Support Case.

I've been through the same issues, with a catalog of about 70K images. The thing is, C1 wants memory, lots of it. In v9, I could simply not import my LR catalog (transitioned from Aperture to LR then to C1). Only with v10, I managed to import it. (They claim that v11 works better with large catalogs, but I'm still on v10, so I can't comment on that.)

I did hide the browser window in order to delay the building of previews (not sure whether this is actually so, but I had the impression that it helped), and I let it run for as long as it took. I let it run as long it used CPU…

I suggest you try importing your images into a catalog rather than in a session. I don't think sessions were designed to handle that many images.

Cheers,
Peter.

P.S. Maybe you can offer your services as a DB specialist to the kind folks of Phase One :-)

NN635625356763119273UL how did you go on with support?
I have the same issue on CO 11, High Sierra, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2017 MBP.

I'm trying to import 6000 photos and it's all good at the start, but at like 2000 photo it starts to grind to a halt.
Sounds like they have a memory leak or something.

You can see the copying of photos slowing down from my external to my internal SSD.

Edit:
I removed CO and everything else (following https://www.phaseone.com/en/Search/Arti ... cleid=1167 ), then downloaded a fresh copy and started an import of 3500 photos and it seemed to work mostly fine. And took like just under an hour vs hours.
I'll try adding back my settings and see how it goes.
Edit2:
I've imported some more photos and it's back to its good old slow self. :(
