USB port on MBP after upgrade to 7.2.3 not working anymore

Postby Nicolas6 » Sat Jul 26, 2014 8:49 am

Hi

I have a very strange incident with my configuration:

Facts:

- MacBook Pro 16gb RAM, 512 SSD (stress-tested by Apple after this issue, with NO hardware flaws

- running OSX Mountain Lion

- Capture One Pro 7.2.3

- shooting tethered with a Nikon D800

- connected over AC to the power

This configuration was running like a charm for month. Then I upgraded to 7.2.3 (from 7.2.2) and from there on my top right USB 3.0 port does not connect with CO anymore. The camera just won't show up in the software. As soon as I switch over to the left hand USB port close to the AC all works like it should.

What I did:

1. Hardware test by Apple: all ok, changed all relevant cables: still not working

2. Downgraded to 7.2.2: still not working

3. Erased all PhaseOne relevant files from the MBP and reinstalled 7.2.2: still not working

4. Strangely enough any other USB 3.0 device works perfectly, like drives or DVD drive

Does anyone have another idea or clue what I could try?
Why did it work for months and suddenly quits the service?
PhaseOne support was nice but stated clearly that they did NOT change anything on the USB port connections in the software update...

Thankful for any advice

Update:

PRAM and SMC reset did not solve the problem.

Another thing that troubles me: within the system profiler it says for the right hand USB port 900mA and for the left hand 500mA.

Why are they different (both are USB 3.0)

???

update 2:

it's getting weirder and weirder: if I let the camera connected on the "dead" USB port the camera all of a sudden mounts after approx 5 minutes and then works with the software like a charm...

if I was a plumber I would assume the pipes are clogged…

Create a support case, we'd be happy to take a look.

Thanks Drew... I already did... And the the outcome is not too pleasant.

Someone at the technical support just said that nothing has been changed from 7.2.2 to 7.2.3 and if it's not working I should use the Nikon NX software...

Sorry if there was anything lost in translation in that support case. The suggestion to use Nikon NX was meant as a troubleshooting step in conjunction to using the Hot Folder feature in Capture One. Nikon NX would facilitate the tether and Capture One would browse the folder.
Additionally, suggestions in the case such as using the standard 3.3 Meter USB cable, an Externally Powered USB Hub and resetting the drivers were suggested and still hold as valid points in solving this.
The supporter was correct that nothing has changed between 7.2.2 and 7.2.3 in this regard so it is quite puzzling, and add to that puzzle that this is the only case we have with this as a conflict, it certainly requires further investigation of your system.

USB problems with Capture One and the MBP are a known issue

Here is an earlier post by a Phase One staffer

Christian Gruner wrote:In the new Retina mac book pro's, it seems that the USB connection is more stable with the right side port. The USB port on the left seems to have connections to the screen and the built-in webcam (and maybe other stuff as well)

What really adds to the puzzle is it works fine with other software.

Incorrect.

The Key word in that post from Christian is "stable". The New MBP's have better power output on the right side, hence the connection is more stable.
Other softwares may use PTP to pull from the card, so a flux in signal is fine for them, but when using the SDK the connection must remain consistent.
So, although I appreciate you pointing this tip out on this thread, it is not consistent to the OP's conflict of the entire tethering process no longer working from one single port.

I Have been having the same problem with the IMac 3.1 GHZ Intel core i5. Since upgrading to 7.2.3 from 7.2.2 I can't connect the camera using a standard cable plus an extension. It now only works without the extension. I have tried it with 2 cameras (Canon 5DmkIII) and Nikon D3X.
Both work only with the 5 metre cable only since the upgrade. I tried retro installing 7.2.2 and it now doesn't work with the extension.
I have tried 3 separate USB extensions in all the ports on the IMac and none work. I also have a macbook which was working fine until the upgrade. It no longer works with the USB extension.
Any Clues?

Plenty!

First it's important to point out that an iMac has very little power at the USB port. Using an extension and finding consistent operation in the first place is quite remarkable as it really never should have worked with regularity.
In the case of an iMac you really NEED an externally powered (plugs into the wall) USB extension to get consistent operation. Unless of course you want to use the Short USB cable which you have confirmed works fine.

The other interesting trend that we've seen with regard to connection in iMacs, MacBooks and MacBook Pro's is the unfortunate coincidence that Capture One 7.2.3 was released around the same time as the 10.9.4 Mac OS Update

This OS Update included "Improves the reliability of waking from sleep" which many other users, forums and discussions have linked to power consumption conflicts. Granted none of this is confirmed by Apple but from our side we've certainly seen a fair share of users claiming that there are issues with 7.2.3 (such as this thread) that coincidentally seem to have occurred around the same time as the 10.9.4 Update... and as even the OP confirmed in the first post, "Downgraded to 7.2.2: still not working" it's further evidence that it wasn't a change on our end but a change to the system.

So, as always, please be vigilant and skeptical of OS updates. They're rarely without their 'hiccups'.

Thanks Drew,
That all makes sense although I am only running 10.8.5 on the iMac. guess I'd better get a powered booster.
