Media Pro SE slower than the old Media Expression ???

Postby NNN636269911238187441 » Wed Apr 05, 2017 11:34 am

I've tested the new Media Pro SE because I'm using the old Media Expression from Microsoft since ages. But now I'm very confused. The Phase One Media Pro is much slower in rendering the photos than the very old MS Expression Media! :?

I think you had a support case about this.

If anyone else is wondering, then the solution was to go to Preference - Media Rendering.
Change rendering to "In foreground for all images"

Expression Media didn't have the option to run it as a background process.
Kind Regards

Now, this is confusing : I am having a support case for the same reason (Media Pro SE is slow and freezes repeatedly) and I have been advised to change the rendering to background "as foreground will give rendering priority over the graphical interface".

Does anyone have a third opinion ? :?

depend on camera Sensor size you used ?
i am using NIKON RAW 12 MB Pixel and have the fallowing duration :

test Nr. 1

1. set the Render Engine to Phase One decoder.
2. Rendering all Image at the foreground NOT Background.

measure Time for 12 MB RAW Picture incl. C1 Setting = 2- 2,5 sec.

Test Nr. 2

1. set the Render Engine : Apple decoder.
2.Rendering all Image at the foreground.

measure Time for 12 MB RAW Picture incl. C1 Setting = 1.5-2 sec. faster

If you are using Fuji Trans. RAW or 100 MB Phase One CAMERAS ..
you need moor time to spend or find a fast better decoder software !

Hi, I know this is a slightly older thread, let me know if I should open new. But we're experiencing the similar issue. We were upgrading from Expressions Media 1.x due to a lot of recent bugginess (we could never get licenses for v.2)!

So in Media Pro SE 2.2, when clicking the Media tab to see full-res renders, it is INCREDIBLY slow on some of our machines. On an iMac i5 w/ 12GB RAM running 10.10.x, it can take up to a minute before the full-size render comes in (it starts with a smaller size) if images are larger than maybe 2000px wide.

- We tried adjusting the setting mentioned (switch to 'Foreground'), but that appears to be only for RAW image renders, correct?? We're having trouble with JPEG/TIF/PSD files rendering.

And forget about trying to open a lightbox with a few images. That was taking multiple minutes, even for small images.

- Just want to know if this is the norm, or if there's anything that may be off. Would have thought after SO many years, there would be improvements!

When trying to open the same catalog on my Mac Pro (quad Xeon 3.7Ghz, 24GB RAM), it does much better, but is still slower than Expressions Media was. The system requirements for SE are much less that what our iMacs are at.

In case it's helpful for anyone else, I think we found the issue (at least for us). It turns out switching the 'Preferred Engine' in the 'Media Rendering > Raw' preferences from 'Phase One' to 'Apple' seems to have solved our issues.

I had assumed that setting would only affect the viewing of RAW files, but it makes a giant difference for us on the rendering of JPEG/TIF/PSD files.

With it set to 'Phase One', trying to switch to Media view on a small JPEG (less than 1200px wide) would take over 30 seconds, with the spinning beachball and the app not responding at times.

When we switch it to 'Apple', switching to Media view is pretty instant, with only a few seconds delay between rendering a smaller preview and the full-res original on really large images (e.g, over 3000px wide). Even the lightbox view now works!

I verified this on 2 different iMacs, as well as my Mac Pro (which wasn't struggling nearly as much). This was even on a brand new catalog with a single small JPEG file, so it wasn't corruption from old catalogs or renders.

Hoping this is it and the program is now at least usable for us!!
