Anyone tethering an IQ3 100 on a PC Notebook?

Postby NN636003842872138226UL » Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:49 pm

Hello everyone,

I was using a DELL 15 XPS together with my IQ3 100 back for a while and had a lot and a lot of lost connections with the back. The problems stopped when I migrated over to a Mac Book. In the end it appears like the PC did not deliver enough power on its USB Ports for the back to work properly in most situations. Even with attached charger.
Is anyone out there actually using a PC Notebook for tethering and what Brand/Modell is it? I kind of want to switch back to the PC.

Best from Munich,
Nick

No Phase One camera nor do I tether often.

I think you have to look into workstation machines to be sure. My 10 year old Thinkpads T series deliver the full USB2.0 spec and maybe more. Even hungry portable HDDs seem to run fine out of one USB port.

If you are talking about cute light consumer notebooks, then it's a huge gamble even with Dell or Lenovo. Maybe with USB-C and if it says "charge" or "fast-charge" port.

Still, I strongly recommend trying before you buy or waiting for some more solid advice.

Cheers

I have a few zbook workstations here. the studio, 15 and the 17.
they all work flawlessly.

in the power management, you need to set "USB selective suspend setting" to disabled for both battery and plugged in.

for my 17" I made a small little illegal power boost. I made a small little device that boost power. it's mainly used for ultra high powered charging but it has got data passthru. it does 5.4v @ 4a, powered by a 12v 2A adaptor.
unfortunately, the problem likes with phaseone and XF not wanting to take on the high power.
each of the zbook has got a special usb power. able to charge your phone even when the laptop is powered down. that port is special. I hooked up a 4A load to it and it was capable of pushing 3.1A. end of the day the it's the back that doesn't want to take on any extra power.

have you tried using better cables or disabling the USB management thingy on the back?

back on my IQ280, if i wanted to enable that thing, i had to use my power booster module

from what I have tested with a normal 1m cable.
fast charge = ok
slow charge = ok
off = ok

normal 3m cable
fast charge = intermittent
slow charge = ok
off = ok

normal 5m cable
fast charge = NO
slow charge = intermittent
off = ok

tethertools 4.6m cable
fast charge = ok
slow charge = ok
off = ok

USB power management = BC 1.2

meaning you need that other end of the cable to be hooked up the a BC 1.2 capable USB port
officially BC 1.2 = minimal 5v1.5a with data

without BC1.2 most USB ports hit 1a-1.5a WITHOUT data. with data only 0.5a

i am waiting for my tetherboost to arrive to see what it actually does.

btw, for those wondering

the USB port isnt design to sustain 3.5a and higher without damage.

I have a QC3.0 convertor. it converts any USB port to a quick charge port. it takes in 5v3.5A and output @ 9v2a or 12v1.5a to charge those qualcomm phones.

the plastic bit that supports the pins eventually melts.

just an extra bit of info for those wondering.
