adapters , macbook pro and Iq 250

Postby NNN634662846640277259 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 8:10 pm

So I went into the apple store last week to buy a new macbook pro

to discover it has 2 exits including the power one and no ( NO!) adapter for lightning to -firewire800

since my IQ250 needs firewire800 and the apple experts could not guarantee an adapter on adapter ( lightning to thunderbolt 3 -and thunderbolt 3 to fire wire)

I had to buy a 2 years old macbook pro mid 2015 with all exits

would you have done the same?

The IQ250 could use USB3, which would still require one dongle to go from USBC/Thunderbolt 3> USB3.
Theoretically, it would be possible to go Thunderbolt 3 > Thunderbolt > Firewire 800, but this degrades the signal and is unreliable in our testing.

but USB 3 does not give the back enough power to work

and since the firewire800 is there to stay in the back , so I find it strange they don't offer any adapter yet

Ah, that is an issue then. They do offer an adapter from Thunderbolt 2 to FW800:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A

The problem is that Thunderbolt does not put out the same 12v that a native FireWire 800 connection will, so adapting from Thunderbolt 2 to FW800 will cause lower than desired power delivery to the back. Additionally, since you'd noted a new MBP, you'd have to adapt from USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 > Thunderbolt 2 > FW800. Again though, it won't deliver the 12v of juice to the back.

This Knowledge Base article covers the issue a bit deeper:

A powered hub with native FW800 port is your best bet to connect to the MBP over FW800, though obviously that's not as portable as a MBP should be (as it requires DC input itself).
