Nikon SB900 flash shoe mounted to 645DF+ body

Postby NN190380UL6 » Sun Mar 02, 2014 3:36 pm

I have Credo 40MP Mamiya 645 DF+ kit (I am very new to MF) and Nikon Gear. Would someone help me figure out using my Nikon SB900 flash hot shoe mounted on the Mamiya 645 DF+ body, please? I have looked up everything I could so far and drawn a blank :( . We have a trip coming up at spring break and I would like to use fill in flash.

Someone else may chime in here and disagree with me (hopefully based on some evidence), but I would strongly advise against doing this.

The SB900 is doing more than just sending a "flash fired" signal, and is in fact trying to communicate to your camera, and the extra signal/voltage running through those contacts absolutely has the potential to cause some serious problems to your body.

Given that it is strongly suggested to never put that SB900 on a Canon camera body, and to never put a Canon speedlite on a Nikon body, I have to urge you to not test this scenario out of safety's sake.

If you absolutely must have a camera mounted flash I would recommend a third party flash that is all manual in function and designed to be camera indipendant. The LumoPro LP180 is a popular option right now. Mfg's website: http://www.lumopro.com/product.php?id=76

Proceed at your own risk.

EDIT: As an alternative, you might consider using that SB900 as an off camera flash. Mount it on a stand and use a set of radio triggers such as PocketWizards, CyberSyncs, or Elinchrom Skyports and then you get your fill flash AND eliminate the chances of toasting circuitry in your 645DF+

Thanks Brian.
I appreciate your input.
I was able to find a Metz SCA 3951 M flash adapter for mamiya 645 on ebay and a used Metz 40 MZ-3i and those should be here in a few days. Those would work as a hot shoe option on my trip, wouldn't they?

Thanks again,

Raghu

Just as a follow-up, The metz and the lumipro both worked great with the mamiya 645DF+ and the photographs were breathtaking. Thanks Brian for the insight. I now have the V grip so perhaps I can do some off camera flash as well.

Hi,
I would like to know if you could use the TTL metering with your Metz 40MZ-3i, SCA3952 and Phaseone DF+ ?
Because I'm not able to make it work properly with the same set. I wonder if it is not compatible, or if my Metz 40MZ-3i have an issue.

I am able to do do TTL metering with my Metz 40MZ-3i using the SCA 3951M adapter on the 645DF+. I am not sure if your SCA 3952 adapter works similarly or not.

Thank you for your answer !
I meet a constant issue with the TTL flash metering with my system. I tried the Metz 40 MZ-3i with the SCA 3952 M and the SCA 3951 M. After that, I tried the Metz 54 MZ-3 (the one which is recommanded by PhaseOne) with both shoes again. I always get 2 f-stop overexposed pictures. But if I set the flash compensation at the camera to -2, it works.
I use the PhaseOne DF with a Leaf Aptus II-8 digital back. What is wrong with this system ?
The PhaseOne body firmware version is 1.07. Do you think that an upgrade to the last firmware would fix this issue ? Any solution to upgrade the body firmware without the V-Grip ?
