Leaf Aptus II 8 & USB-c

Postby NNN635316898702034765 » Thu Jan 07, 2016 2:17 pm

Hi,

As a Leaf Aptus II 8 owner I'm still stuck to my old MacBook Pro for tethered shooting since the thunderbolt-firewire 800 adapter doesn't provide enough power to make the DB working without a powered repeater.

I recently figured out that the new usb-c provides a lot more voltage than the thunderbolt, and theoretically enough to power the Leaf Aptus II 8 without repeater.

Does someone have tried this with the new macbook ?

Thank you !

Well, the big problem would be that there is no such thing as a USB to FW800/400 adapter. So how are you going to connect the Aptus to the computer?

I believe a powered repeater is all that is going to work.

Thanks Robert,
I didn't find such an adapter either but I assume someone would make one sometime... you have firewire 800 adapter for all existing ports and usb-c ports is going to be a new standard.

The big problem with a Firewire to USB is just in how the protocol is. USB is only controlled by the Host Computer, the peripherals are polled to see if they require any services. Firewire on the other hand is a pure bus structure. Any device can be the Master and initiate communications with any other device, the computer does not have to be involved. This is why you can connect a Digital Pack Harddrive and your Aptus can save the images off to it.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of those technical details.
I will have to change my DB at one point but this kind of obsolescence is difficult to swallow after an investments such a MF back.
Technology...
