Leaf Aptus 75 Focusing Problems

Postby NNN634758084811211079 » Sun Mar 03, 2013 12:36 am

Good evening,

I recently aquired an used Aptus 75 for my 500 C/M from a former Leaf technician. At first it was hard to focus, I though I wasn´t focusing properly. I bought new screens, new lenses... but the problem maintained. There is a huge difference in the image I get in the groundglass and the imagem on the computer. The focused plane is sistematically 5/6cm behind what it was supposed to be. I´ve consulted several technicians that said the camera was ok, I shot with a Phase One back was the focusing was correct, I changed for the Leaf again and the same problem, the focused area was way far than the one selected by me on the groundglass. If I invert the groundglass the focus gets more accurate, but not entirely.

Does anyone have this problem? The guy who sold me said he never had problems, but the truth is that I used a Phase one on an ex-teatcher studio and the focus was correct, and then changed to the Leaf, and the problem came back. We didn´t have time to try the Leaf on his 555ELD.

Do Leaf/Mamiya provide a shim kit to correct this problem? Does anyone have an answer?

Here is the enormous focusing distance from the groundglass (it was done with the focusing hood plus a clock maker´s 10x magnifier, for no mistakes).

Best Regards,
Diogo Sousa

Hi

Best option here is to contact your local Mamiya-Leaf dealer to get the back in for service.
At the service center the back will be refocused and adjusted on sensor level.

Hello Ulf,

the thing it that the Leaf dealer in Portugal, since I didn´t bought the equipment from them (they tried to sell me a second hand back for an incredibly ridiculous price), they don´t care. I called them yesterday to report the problem and they didn´t even listen. They said it was not their problem, that it was between me and the seller, and for them, it was 2500€ to send it to Israel, final.

Regards,
Diogo

Hi

A focus check / adjust would not cost this price. The price you are quoting sound like a major repair.
Also, it does not need to go to Israel, it can go to Denmark which is much cheaper shipping wise.
If the dealer is not helpful, then try with one close by, like spain.

Hello Ulf,

thank you very much. The camera was serviced, so I relud that out, since the Phase One back I tried worked perfectly. What I told you was what Leaf Portugal told me. I tried to describe the problem, that was a focus reajustment, and they didn´t even listen. They said straight away that It was my problem and the sellers, although I have a Leaf product and they are the official representants of Leaf, and if it was for them, it would be shipped to Israel straight away, for 2500€... The Denmark option wasn´t even discussed with me, so I didn´t even know there was the possibility of making that ajustment on Denmark. I´ll ask for a budget estimate on Leaf Spain and Portugal, and file a complaint against Leaf Portugal.

Thank You,
Diogo

The problem is that I´m not in the guarantee, since I bought it from a former Leaf dealer.

A clock makers magnifier is an incredible piece for a perfect focus. It´s also very used in computer engeneering. It´s a cilindrical magnifier, with a loupe on top, and a plastic body for correct focus (the lenght of the plastic body is the exact lenght for the 10x magnification on perfect focus). You just put it on a surface, and look through the lens in the top, and you get a perfect 10x magnification. If you put it on your hand, it does an incredible macro of the skin. So, instead of using the loupe from the focusing hood, I putted down the loupe, and inserted the magnifier inside the focusing hood (it fits just perfectly), on top of the focusing screen, hence getting a 10x magnification of the image on center of the screen.

Something looking like that.

I have the same issue with my Aptus 75 with Mamiya 645AFD but not in Portugal - in Poland. Any ideas?
