Choice: P25 or P30?

Postby ajmichael » Thu Apr 27, 2006 10:15 pm

I'm currently using a Canon 1Ds2 and looking for something to give improved quality for large prints - typically 24\" x 36\". I'm shooting fashion and portraits, partly in the studio and partly on location, which may be flash or available light.

I'm looking at a Hasselblad 553ELX for the body because I want a waist-level finder and I prefer the \"look\" of the Zeiss lenses. I've narrowed the choice to either a P25 or a P30 but I'm finding it difficult to choose between the two, especially as a new P30 and a refurbished P25 are exactly the same price. I can't do a straight comparison because I can't find a dealer with a loan or hire P30 in Hasselblad V fit. I'm particularly interested in detail resolution, so the P30's larger number of Mp appeals in that respect, but then it's using a smaller part of the image circle. Some posts I've read suggest that the P25 has better gradation and gives better skin tones. But the P25 apparently suffers from moire. Help!

I'd appreciate comments and suggestions, especially from people who've used either (or both) backs in similar situations. A big thanks to Damien Lovegrove for his existing comments in this forum!

Hey Andy,

I was in the same situation during the last week.
the local phase one dealer visits mit 3 days ago with both backs and I had 2 hours time to check then out. For me it was most important to see the data at 400 and 800 ASA so I made a couple of portrait shoots from the dealer witch I could send you if you like.
I the end I did order the p30 yesterday. I do also go for the V system.

Give me a note, then you get the pictures

Hi Joerg-

I'm on the same quest. If it would be possible to send me comparison images between the P25 and P30 I'd much appreciate it.

thanks-

Hello, any ideas why the P30 is being marketed as a fashion photography specific solution as opposed to commercial work in general? My limited experience with P25 shows too much moire to my liking so I'm interested in looking at the P30 which is supposed to have much less--but I don't shoot fashion.

Thanks,
Dave

Because of the 1.3 crop (think that's right) the back is limited for wide angle use such as architecture. Because of the microlenses used to increase senstivity that back has problems when mounted on view cameras using swings and tilts.
Other than that it's fine for photography beyond fashion, as I understand it.
And very attractive for the price, thus my asking previously.

P30 is ideal for telephoto work at 400 iso and above. It's a dream. It's a notch above the P25 for fashion work in every respect. If you value your wide angle stuff and are after an all round solution then the P25 is a bargain.

Excuse me for coming in with a comment.
Have any of you guys tried the P21 yet?
This back is such joy, basically it does have the chip size of the P30 and the pixel size of a P25 but wow is it fast.
On a Hasselblad V it is not physically possible to out shot the back, not even if you are using an ELM, ELX or ELD. I had it tethered to an iMac Intel.
It is with out a doubt the fastest MFDB by today’s date.

OK Ulf,

Since you've used the P21 can you give an observation of where the P30 is better and where the P21 is better, other than speed? How about moire issues?

P30 framelines

Postby johnkraus » Sat May 13, 2006 3:30 pm

Damien, how is working with the P30 framelines for you? Do you get used to them or find yourself often wishing for the fuller frame of the P25?
thanks-

I found this interesting page:
http://www.nphotoworks.jp/gazou/Factory/018/018.html

My Japanese isn't that great but in the bottom there is some cool images shot with P45, P30, P25 and P21 which shows blowup when you hover mouse ontop.

P30 framelines

Postby johnkraus » Mon May 15, 2006 10:26 pm

Hi Ulf,

Does Phase one have any graphic (for the H1 in my case) showing what the H1 groundglass normall looks like, with then the P25/45 croplines and P30/21 croplines overlayed?

That would be most helpful. Thanks-John Kraus

This is not exactly what you asked for but close enough to show the difference.

Can anybody give practical comparison of where the P21 is better than the P30 and vice versa?

P25 and P45 difference is pixel size and single verses dual read out which means the two backs have about the same speed when shooting to a fast computer despite the chip size difference.
P21 and P30 difference is pixel size but both have dual read out which means that P21 is faster.

P2x has 9 micron pixels while P4x and P3x has 6.8micron pixels.

If you have a manual Hasselblad you can not out shot the back. Atleast I did not managed to when tethered to a iMac 2Ghz Intel
