Mac OS 11 Big Sur is a no no for Firewire

Postby Ulf » Fri Dec 11, 2020 2:26 pm

With the release of Capture One 21 comes official support for macOS 11 Big Sur. However, it is important that we make you acutely aware of a warning in the release notes:

• Tethering via Firewire is not supported with macOS 11 (Big Sur)

To be more specific, when a Phase One back is connected via FireWire, the computer will experience a kernel panic. Therefore, any user who relies on FireWire connection should not upgrade to macOS 11.
We have also reports that this is a system wide issue in Mac OS 11 which also affects other firewire based devices.

Additional notes:

• USB connections are not affected and remain fully supported ( Any IQ series Camera backs )
• Only Capture One 21 is currently supported under macOS 11 but the issue is not related to Capture One as this issue does not exist under macOS 10.15 on Capture One 21, 20 or earlier.

Hello.
Thanx for the report. I've just discover the problem by the crash of my computer.
So I've to downgrade to Catalina.

But the big question is : "will the Firewire connection never work on MacOs Big Sur or have we to wait an update from Apple?"

I've just sent a report to Apple but if they don't put an update for us (all the Firewire DB photographer), it's a kind of disaster.

Thanx.

Hi

I connect my H25 & P30+ via a USB-C to Thunderbolt then Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter to my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
currently running Mojave 10.14.6

Will this not be possible with Big Sur?

Cheers
Saul

Is there a solution to use P-Backs with Big Sur?
Maybe a converter from Fire Wire to USB or something like tether tools air direct?

Just got my first P65+ and was devestated when i discovered that the firewire tethered support was going to end with Big Sur, because og Apples new chipset.

It works fine with Catalina, but not with Capture One 21. (Capture One 20 is the latest version)

1.Does Phase One have a plan for us with p/p+ backs?
2.Is it possible to have a firewire / USB convertion on the back, or through an adapter?
3.Or is there a upgrade plan to IQ160, IQ260?

Really hope you have a solution to this problem!

The last message I received from Apple Support was not exactly uplifting

I understand your hopeless situation, but we can not guarantee that old standards live on forever and ever, and sometimes you have to live with the fact that even expensive specialized photographic equipment can be destined for the scrap heap!

Hi

Capture One 21 can be used up to version 14.1.x
With Capture One 21 build 14.2, the application became native on the new M1 computers and firewire connectivity is gone I am sorry to say.

1. There is upgrade options to IQ series which have USB, contact your local Phase One partner.
2. No there is not, it has to be built in the back native which it is in all IQ series backs.
(USB 3 in IQ1, 2 and 3.
USB-C in IQ4 which also have ethernet and WiFi as connection options.)
3. Yes.
