P65+ with Mamiya RZproII in 2016?

Postby NNN636100137801993561 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 11:29 pm

Dear All,
First time post here. I've been shooting analogue MF cameras for the last 2 decades. I now use an extensive Mamiya RZ pro II system, shoot 35mm digital when I have to. I have never been satisfied with the quality of 35mm digital, predominantly because of sensor size limitations, and I am now considering getting a used P65+ back.

Is this still a reliable back? Is there anything I should be looking at when buying used? I would love to hear people's experiences, especially in this combo.

Many thanks!

Pat

The P65+ is fairly reliable, we had some odd firewire issues here and there.
But overall the P65+ is far more reliable than an RZ67 is. We switched to the Hasseblad 555 and never looked back.

I actually just bought a P65+ (used) and a RZproIID in 2016 and L O V E it. It is quite a change from the Nikon D810 but for the better. Feels more like real photography.

The P65+ has been super realiable for me and no tethering issues. Just always shoot with a battery in the back, never rely on the power supply of the FW port in your computer. Having said that the P65 is much like shooting Film - you are more or less limited to iso400 and it behaves the same in many ways. A modern DSLR (and the files it produces) like the D810 is technically superior but I still prefer shooting the RZ.

The RZ IID has been pretty reliable with the occasional hiccups - most of the time taking off the adapter plate and putting it back on solved the issues. I had some shooting days with several hiccups but most days are without any issues.

From what I gather from my friends I would not reccomend shooting on the RZII (without D) as you need a lot of funny synccables to make it and it that's quite prone for error.

Shoot me an email if you have any questions: dave.muc@gmail.com. Also I can send you a PDF with custom masks I made.

One year forward with the P65+ (now a Mamiya RZ pro II D - less heat and, consequently, noise than shooting with regular pro II) and I absolutely love the files it produces. No regrets.

Speaking from personal experience- remember to un-mount the back from the RZ body when you're not using it. While it's mounted, it will drain the 6v battery in the RZ.

You don't need to remove back - enough is to set release button collar towards orange dot (emergency shutter operation) at your body.
