Phase One 645AF focusing issue

Postby NN634822785108596521UL » Thu Apr 24, 2014 6:21 am

Hi all,

I am new to medium format digital and just picked up a used set up from a very reputable dealer here in Australia.

I received the camera today (645AF-P45+ and 80mm 2.8 D) and upon trying out for the first time I noticed that the focus seemed really weird. I wear glasses so I know how to adjust a diopter and it was set. The camera settings in the viewfinder are tack sharp. HOWEVER, when using autofocus, the focus indicator is showing that everything is in focus and the resulting image is sharp, but the viewfinder is blurry and doesn't look as though it will be in focus.
When using manual focus, the viewfinder looks like the image will be spot on, but the indicator shows it's not in focus and the resulting image is in fact blurry.
Changing the diopter doesn't help any. I have tried different lenses and it doesn't help and I also put the back on my older Mamiya AFD body and it works perfectly.

The dealer is sending a replacement while they have this one looked at, but has anyone seen this before? I did see in another thread that someone described the same problem and said their body had to be replaced.

If Manual Focus looks sharp in the Prism, and is sharp in the final captured image, then camera itself is fine as is the lens and back.
If the Auto Focus consistently results in out of focus images, the camera needs to be sent for service and the AF sensor recalibrated.

Hi Drew, thanks for the reply

When manual focus is used, it looks sharp in the viewfinder, but the final image captured is blurry.

When auto focus is used, it looks blurry in the view finder, but the image captured is sharp

Perform a Focus Test on a few lenses to determine if the issue is the lens or back.

If the errors are consistent among many lenses (always use manual focus) then the back will need to come in as well as the body. We can refocus the back and fix the AF calibration on the body.

I have used the Phase One 80mm 2.8 D, Mamiya 80mm 2.8 and Mamiya 35mm 3.5 and it does it on all of them.

I then put the back on my Mamiya 645 AFD body and tried it will all the lenses and everything works fine on that body, therefor I would think that it is something to do with the Phase One 645AF body and not the lenses or P45+ back
