Processing Files to Maximum Size

Postby NN1497102 » Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:21 am

I Shoot with a P45+, and I am trying to find out what is the largest file size I can process. Initially, I was told that a 16 bit file size processed at 100 percent and 300 ppi, that produces a 225 MB file is the largest that the P45+ is capable of producing. Is this true?

I have spoken to other people who give me different answers and I am very confused at this point.

And what happens if I process a file at 400 ppi, or 600 ppi? If I process files above 300 ppi am I getting interpolation in the file?

Also, if I try to process a file in Capture One that is 48" x 62" at 600 ppi the file size is around 2.5 GB and the software crashes. Why is this happening?

Ultimately, I am trying to understand and know how to figure out what is the largest file is that I can produce through processing with the Capture One software.

Thank you.

Change the Scale to 250%. That is the limit.

If you process at 16Bit and 250% the resulting image is approx. 1GB, 60" x 45".
If you change the PPI to 600, the resulting size is simply adjusted by a value of 1/2.

Thanks for responding, Drew. Can I change the ppi to 400 and keep all the other settings the same? How will that affect the file?

Are there any published articles that discuss file processing in Capture One?

Also, what is happening when you change the scale from 100 percent to 250 percent? Are the pixels being interpolated? Sorry for all the questions. I'm trying to understand how processing works.

Adjusting the PPI simply changes the concentration of information. The overall amount of data stays the same, however the Information in a specific dimension changes. For example, a 10 x 10 at 300PPI simply becomes a 5 x 5 at 600PPI. So in your case a 10 x 10 at 300PPI would become a 7.5 x 7.5 at 400PPI.
In regard to interpolation, you could pay devils advocate and argue how that term relates to a RAW file but really whenever you upres something your sampling data... which is in fact interpolation.
