P25 vs. Leaf Valeo 22Wi

A photographer friend of mine asked if I'd lend my new Phase One P25 back and Hasselblad H1 to do a side by side comparison with the Leaf Valeo 22Wi.

His reasons for the test is to decide which back he will eventually purchase. He wanted to test the back under his normal working environment which is fashion in studio using strobes, and in studio using available (window) light.

We shot each setup starting with one back, and then switching backs using the same lighting. A gray card was photographed in each lighting change to insure proper white balance.

There were several print industry pros on hand to witness the images (retoucher, pre-press technician, fashion photographer, digital technician, and a color management specialist).

When the dust settled, the unanimous choice for best file (lo/no noise) and best color (skin tones), best visual feeling, best workflow, best user friendly interface, was with the Phase One P25 file processed with C1 Pro.

The pre press guy was most impressed with the ability to process out multiple files of different resolution in C1 Pro all at the same time (16 bit tiff, 8 bit tiff, lo rez jpeg etc.). That along with the fact that adjustments (color, exposure, levels/curves) could be made to a file on the fly, and applied to selected images so easily, and if desired reverted just as easily. There are so many pluses to this software that it will make you smile. On the other hand the Leaf software while good, is not easy nor user-friendly.

The test brought together all the players of the digital workflow, and it was great to have direct interaction and feedback from pro like this.

All files were viewed on a calibrated Eizo CG21 LCD monitor using G5 Dual 2.0 with 4GB of ram.
