Capture One 12 DAM Help

Postby NNN636547779233695174 » Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:16 pm

I switched to C1 several months ago from LR. However, I am still having difficulty in establishing how to use it to handle my entire catalog. I love the isolated capabilities of using sessions, but I miss the ease of also being able to easily access my entire catalog. I know that within a session I can access all my system folders, or that I could use a catalog that houses all my images, but I seem to run into issues with either of those methods. Using a large catalog is very slow, especially to load. This was never an issue in LR. Accessing my other shoots through system folders while in a session seems limited, as I don't see a way to search by keyword using this method. If I know what I am looking for, great. Otherwise it lacks the convenience of a total catalog. Ultimately I want quick access to searching all images, creating albums of favorites throughout, but I feel very stuck. Not knowing the best way to proceed.

I upgraded to C1 12, hearing it handles large catalogs better, but I still don't see it close to LR. Am I doing something wrong? Any advice or workarounds that others are using?

Thanks in advance.

I find that Capture On v12.1 runs faster than previous 12.0. I note that v12.1 has to upgrade the catalog, and I suspect thry've improved the database keys.

Find unsupported images and remove them from the catalog, and even from the catalog trash.

Try removing the Filters tool from the Library tool tab (and make a custome tool tab fo Filters).

How many images do you have?

Having migrated over from LR, what would common unsupported files be to search out and delete? Within all the folders I've imported, the anticipated files would be CR2, DNG, JPG, PSD, TFF, RAF (Fuji raw), and MOV.

I'd investigate the TFF (or did you mean TIFF?), MOV, small images++, TIFF, PSD and DNG files in that order.

++small images: images with less than 512 pixels horizontally or vertically are unsupported.

At one time many types of TIFF files were unsupported. This was improved, but a TIFF file can be almost anything, and so certain types of TIFF files are probably still unsupported.

The situation with DNG and PSD is similar.

At one time thre were issues with certain type of CR2 files (something to do with mRAW inside). Not the CR2 files I had. This has been improved

I eliminated my MOV files (and all video and audio files) from C1 catalogs, doubled the size or added a border to my small images, started by eliminating all TIFFs, then re-exported them from Aperture and added them back (some tools create a TIFF with layers and a missing Alpha channel), replaced the few PSDs (layer issues) and DNGs by TIFFs.

Support may have improved support for layers in these formats since I migrated.

I would copy your main catalog to a test catalog, remove the Filters tool from the Library tab, and remove entire categories of images until performance improves, Then start over, and remove that last category from the previous trial first first, and repeat the process.

From the Capture One Release Note https://www.captureone.com/en/features/release-notes?language=en&remainingTrial=30&variant=3&version=12.0.4&isTrial=false&shopRequested=false

File support: Notes and limitations
....
Capture One DNG colors

Capture One has the ability to treat and display camera files that were converted to DNG, as if it was the original RAW. The file in question has to come from a camera we officially support with native RAW support and the RAW data also needs to have been embedded in the DNG at the point of conversion. Note we do not support Adobe lens or Color Profiles in this work flow.

Other file support

Layered Tiff: Capture One 9.1 onward can support Tiff files with alpha channel or layers saved in the file (from other apps like Adobe Photoshop) but for viewing purposes only. Reprocessing the image will result in a new flattened image.

PSD: Capture 10.1 onward can support PSD files in the viewer. The PSD can contain any adjustments, layers, text or smart objects but must be saved in Photoshop with “maximize compatibility” enabled. Reprocessing the image from Capture One will result in a new flattened image.

File size limitations
  • Smallest supported file for viewing: minimum side of 16px
  • Smallest supported file for editing: minimum side of 512px.
  • Largest supported file: Width x Height must be smaller than 40000 x 20000 pixels or
    sum thereof.

No way. I am surprised your catalog contains more than 100,000 images and works almost fine. Indeed, catalog functionalities and performances have been the weaker point of Capture One, when compared to Lightroom's catalog.
Are your images referenced or managed within the catalog ?

Robert,
My current catalog of 115k+ is what I worked with in LR, and it worked great. Loading, searches, whatever. In trying to do a single conversion to C1 of this LR catalog is where I ran into big issues. With 12.1 that complete catalog is running much better than with previous versions, but still not as slick as LR. My current plan of action is to start importing single sessions at a time into a new "main" catalog. Once I go back far enough to the point that I was using LR exclusively, I might keep that catalog in LR. It has all the adjustments and such. If I ever need to start from scratch on raw adjustments with something older, I may bring those files into the C1 catalog.

So far, all my images are referenced. They are still in the original file structure I used with LR, which was in a custom location. Most recent files on the local HD, and then the vast majority on externals.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster (including the long alpha numeric forum name which resists editing) My LR catalogue of 87k images is mostly Raw and JPEG files but the catalogue also includes video, tiff and PSDs. Based on Eric's tips above I am removing the movies and PSD's. I want to keep the tiff because many are scans of negatives but I have already discovered that Capture1 can not display greyscale tiffs.

My database (catalogue) is stored on my main internal SSD and the images are stored by year on a removable USB 3 drive. The performance of the database is best described as adequate. I was so disappointed with this performance that I raised a support ticket suggesting that the database side of the application was long overdue some refactoring given that the LR database works so well.

At the moment I'm exploring splitting my catalogue into several smaller files in the quest for greater performance. This leads to the obvious question of what is a reasonable number of images to be held in a Capture One catalogue?

Any thoughts or tips ?

best wishes
Simon

In my account I am named as UWE, no sign there, where I can change my alphanumericname?

Thanks in advance,

If I log in at Phaseone.com, then I get page headed Welcome Ian. I see two large blue buttons for Log Out and Edit Profile. Edit Profile takes me to a screen with a number of fields, and the fourth one down in the left hand column (between Password and Phone) contains my username - Ian3 in my case.

Do you get a similar screen?

Ian

Edited to add - if you put in a user name, you then have to click the "Check Availability" button (that's why I ended up as Ian3, because when I do that some of my preferred names are already taken).
