A basic first question just to ensure it has not been overlooked.

In the preferences for Capture activity (tether) do you have Sony ticked as a tethering option?

If that is OK is it possible that Sony has an in-camera connection mode setting that means it will always, on connection of a cable, default to something that makes it communicate with the computer as a storage device? If so that will most likely prevent the C1 Tethering function becoming active.

Other than those suggestions I will leave further comments to others as I use Windows and Canons so cannot help much with advice on Mac and Sony.

Most likely a Sony setting. Go to the menu > Setup4 > USB Connection > PC Remote.
