Storage area network or cloud storage

Postby NN259560UL » Tue Apr 30, 2019 7:54 pm

I am looking at moving my catalogue out of my Mac Pro Late 2013 to either a storage area network or cloud storage, most likely iCloud.

Does anybody recommend one approach over the other? My personal preference is a storage area network but I am still left with the problem of having offsite backups.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a storage area network capable of supporting Thunderbolt 2 and 3?

Is a Thunderbolt 2 compatible network the only option for a storage area network?

What would be the recommenced RAID for storage area network?

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

Hi,

I'm wondering if you are ware of the difference between a SAN and cloud storage?

SANs are highly specialised storage devices that have their own dedicated networks, frequently 4 or 8Gb fiber channel (this requires special FC switches).
Cloud storage goes over your WAN, that might be operating at 20Mbit if your luck (though could be 200Mbit or even 500Mbit too if you're lucky).

iCloud isn't really suitable for CO data, even WiFi to a NAS would be faster and that isn't even recommended.

You might want to opt for a simple USB c or Thunderbolt 3 (or2) disk, that would be fast enough for CO.
Then you could sync that data to some sort of cloud storage, which again is limited by your WAN speed.

Storage manufacturer Promise has (or had) thunderbolt to FC adapters, allowing you to hookup your Mac to a fiber channel fabric.

I used to manage and build large storage area networks (80 / 240TB) I have played with various options / technologies / brands.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Ron
