What a Delight, my surface book 2 replaced my desktop without much of a performance penalty in C1.
I was hoping that I could use the laptop for off line selecting images in my sessions. It turns out that C1 hits the CPU heavy when an image is selected, it doesn't matter if it is shown in the browser or not.
selecting an image gets the CPU to 70% for 1-2 seconds. It looks like C1 is doing a lot of preprocessing even if you don't do any adjustments. if you return to the same image a minute later, it starts again, there is no caching.
In this situation battery life on this wonderful machine is maximum 3 hours when only selecting images in C1.
Mind you, there is no processing taking place.
I am willing to bet even that processing one image is less CPU intensive than 'touching' an image, even if you dont'do any editing.
Tests I've done:
GPU accelaration: no effect
Preview size: no effect
Are previews somehow regenerated? No
Run on different machine: no effect
C1-10 or 11, no difference
The only energy effecient way to select photo's in large sets is working in the lightbox and only hit the rating stars.
I understand that processing RAW files is heavy lifting but I can't understand all the 'Running all day on a laptop' stories. I bet they are plugged in more often than suggested.
I hope for some nice tips to be able to do some of the work offline without worries.
Thanks,
