Converting catalog to session / backup?

Postby NN634751830024897882UL » Wed Sep 09, 2015 6:37 pm

Good day, I'm wondering if I have made mistake to choose to use catalogs instead of session. I have been reading online and if I understand correctly if the catalog database will become corrupted then my edits is lost when I open a backup catalog. Is that correct or am I misunderstanding something?

Is it possible to export edits to the image folders like it does in Sessions?

Can I convert from catalog to session? If yes, how?

I'm little bit lost but I want to have my backups easily restored if something bad happens. I'm now storing the files on internal HD's as well as two external HD's which only one is at my office but the other one is safe elsewhere.

BTW. my raw files are referenced in the catalog so they have it own folder structure.

Your catalog database does contain your edits, so yes, if anything happens to that database, your edits are at risk. So, that is why you backup your catalog frequently.

In case you like to open some (or all) your images in a session, you can use the File > Export > Originals command. Make sure to include adjustments (checkbox). Of course, you database must be healthy for this operation to be successful.

So far for facts. What you actually referring at is that you have become a bit scared with your catalog. Backup your database frequently and verify it frequently as well (File > Verify) and you should be save.

If I do "File < Check document" and run my backup of my catalogue through that I get "Database check failed!" and then I do Verify and that fails too, then I do repair and that fails too.
In fact all my catalog backups seems to fail this check. :(

I created a new "test" catalog, imported few photos and did auto-adjustments on some photos. Then I run through the check and it came up with "database checked OK".

What should I do? I'm running version 7.2 build 36

I would contact support and ask their help in repairing the database.

In addition you could try this. Export a collection (start small, scale up if succesful) to a catalog (from File menu). Open that catalog and check it.
Chances are that the exported catalog is ok and adjustments came along. This way you can create a new catalog from the old one and you are save to go one. Worth a try. Nothing to lose.

I have contacted support and I'm waiting for reply. :)

I can't find option of exporting collection, if I go in the file menu I get option of "export originals" or "export variants" but it is blacked out if I don't have a photo within the collection selected.

Sorry, my error. The option to export a collection is new since CO8.

Ok, I will wait to see what support says before doing anything. :)

Wouldn't it be risky to upgrade to CO8 (to get that import/export collection feature) when the database check fails?

Good question. In general, yes, I would prefer a healthy catalog before I upgrade.

But what if you would make a duplicate catalog and feed that one into CO8 (you have a 30-day trial period, and it can be installed next to CO7). CO8 will do its own checks, upgrades the database and you have more management features.

Sounds like something to try if you're into it. You can read more on both the import and export features here:

In the mean time you will probably see some Ambassador advice which could come in handy in case you upgrade.
