Colors change with zoom

Postby NN635187444613414946UL » Mon Jun 16, 2014 8:29 pm

Hi there,

Long user of Lightroom, I'have been trying Capture one for 2 weeks, and really like it.
Therefore I have a curious issue that I don't understand :

When I zoom to 100% in a picture (Raw), colors are not the same than preview (-50%)
I know that it's essential to zoom to 100% to have accurate view on noise, before processing NR.
But that's the first time I see that for colors.

I tried on lightroom of course, and everything is ok.

I made two caps (no change except zoom)

What do you think ?

Perhaps the preview image is not showing the white balance/other adjustments that you have made? Does File > Regenerate Previews help? I had a different issue that was (mostly) fixed by doing that, could be worth a try.

Yes I tried everything, delete folders with proxies, or regenerate previews.
Create new catalog or session, still the same.

BUT, I understand something very important :D

I made a lot of tests tonight, and find a clue :
This colors shift only appears on picture of 6400 iso or more.
If your pictures are under those numbers, colors stay normal when you zoom.

I won't say it's a very big issue.
But I hope Phase One will fix it, since there is no trouble with Lightroom.

Just to clear this up a bit, there isn't much to fix as the render is just the difference between a preview and actual pixels.

At a zoom that is <50% the pixel values for color are averaged. This is the same for any software as 1 single screen pixel cannot show multiple values at once. The values for the actual pixels are averaged. This is simply the function of any/all systems.

At a zoom that is <50% the pixel values are averaged but with greater accuracy as more diversity is possible. At 100% the preview is pixel for pixel accurate.

Images with a lot of color noise will show this effect to a greater degree due to the haphazard color values present. The same effect will be seen in Photoshop, Lightroom, DXO, Silkypix, etc. Again, this is simply the nature of data preview on a screen.

Hi Drew,
Thanks for you anwser :)

I really want to agree with you, but my works on Lightroom tell me otherwise.
As you can see, on lightroom there is absolutely no color differences at different zoom level.

Any sample size will have a color difference.

Image

Gain, the image that is being used as an example has some noise and some high detail areas. Resampling at anything <50% will result in a deviation from the true pixel for pixel representation found at 100%.

Hi Dew.

Any sample size will have a color difference.

Ok with that.

But you have to admit that colors shift are far more important and visble in C1 than lightroom.
And only in photos with more than 6400ISO.
Beside this sensitivity, it's perfect.

And this is all due to the noise of the image in connection to the Noise Reduction settings. An image with a lot of noise, as previously specified, has a lot of unsystematic color values. As you zoom out the resample takes into account many more errant values and thus the median value will reflect this.

Searching for information on this behavior. Still présent in CP 9. It should have nothing to do with noise reduction. Noise reduction, statistically, should not change the whole hue of the picture.

I've got an example where "adaptative view (i.e. 37%) show an orange cast and 50% or 100% view is purple.
