Higher ISO performance than P30+

Postby NN635503104733533977UL » Fri Sep 22, 2017 2:06 pm

I shoot 645 DF+ combined with a P30+ now, and I adore my gear. Resolutionwise, the P30+ holds up for my use (though more is always welcome of course), but I am starting to wish for better ISO performance now that I face yet another winter above the arctic circle. For my commercial shoots it works great, but with better ISO performance, I could also use it for art projects.

So the question is; what backs can I consider for better ISO? Money is an issue, so I am realistically looking for which back is the next step on the Phase One latter.

The only one you have as an option is one of the CMOS backs, either the 50c or 100c ones. You could look at one of the backs that have the Sensor+ mode but you trade resolution for ISO, when in sensor+ mode. I believe the 40Mpix one goes down to 10Mpix when in sensor+ mode. The 60Mpix to 15Mpix and the 80Mpix down to 20Mpix.

So I think you would have to go with either the IQ150, IQ250 or IQ3XX series, other wise most top out at ISO 800, or in sensor+ mode 3200 at ¼ the resolution.

Thank you! Is the ISO performance different on different backs? I am thinking about how far up they are usable. I think the P30+ works fine at 200, ok at 400, and everything above 400 is not worth trying - in my opinion so far. Does other backs with the same maximum ISO have less noise at higher ISO settings?

I cannot answer as my sample size is too small.

Doing an educated guess, I would think the 40 and 60Mpix versions have about the same noise, as the size difference makes up for the resolution. And the 80Mpix would have a little more to fit the extra pixels in.

If you really want to figure this out, get the data sheets on the ones you are interested and compare photo-site sizes, Same size should have the same noise, then adjust if it has the micro-lenses, that give the sensor 1 extra stop up.

CCD - 50 to 800 iso
CCD w/microlens 100 to 1600
CCD w/sensor+ 200 to 3200 (¼ resolution)

So I think the noise across the ISO range would be about equivalent. (Your Millage may very).

ISO performance does vary a bit from back to back using CCD, but not in a significant manner. If you feel 400 is currently usable on the P30+, then a P65+ or IQ180 in sensor Plus mode should serve you to ISO 800 or possibly 1600 - just note that it is a smaller file.

CMOS high ISO is an entirely different story. I think a 50mp back will serve you perfectly. It will deliver better quality at ISO 3200 than you are seeing at ISO 800 on the P30+. Even ISO 6400 produces acceptable results in my opinion.
