Shooting outdoor in snow | P25

Postby Stefan1 » Mon Jan 23, 2006 11:24 am

Hello,

I leaving tomorrow for a outdoor winter shooting.
Expected temperature will be -10° C and less.
I have no experience shooting with P25 under these
conditions and I am thankfull for every kind of advice or tipp.
Is there any recommendation in handling when bringing back
equipment (P25, Powerbook) to warmth ?
Thanks in advance.

shoooting outdoors in the snow

Postby juan1 » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:04 pm

Stefan,

I am based out of Calgary Alberta. I have been shooting with my P20 for about 18 months now. Some of my first winter jobs with the back were in temperatures of sub minus 18º C + small wind chill factors. So far the back has been good up to about 3 hours at a time( that's all I could take) with out any problems. To avoid humidity; all of my gear is opened and returned to the case in the outdoor temperature. I always keep the spare battery inside my jacket near my body although I haven't had to swap batteries yet. I don't usually take my laptop out when it's that cold so I can't suggest anything. Hope this helps. One more thing, In Alberta the cold temperature is usually a very dry cold.

Juan,

thanks for the answer, it puts me a little more at ease.
I will keep the laptop in the car and a battery in the jacket.

Whaaaaat?-- Three hours shooting on ONE battery--Geeez - the P25 eats batteries I sometimes change up to THREE in a day--and at mild Oz temps as well.

Do you have the name of these Miracle batteries?

Enviously

Original batteties with the P20/25 was 1700/1800mAh if I remember right which was then upgraded to 2000mAh.
Today we have start shipping the new generation backs with 2500mAh batteries which are fully compatible with the P20/25.
They can be purchased through any authorized Phase One dealer.

I shoot almost a whole day (approx 5-6 hours) with one battery outdoors at normal 20c.
I have my back set to power off after 5 min and no automatic preview.

My batteries are the 2000 mAh!

everything works fine. As almost: some shoots
I never would have done on film in this way.

I had about 200 shots within 5 hours.
Battery level is still half (2000)

Yoh Thanks Ulf and Guys,

Hmmm- I must sit down and recheck my back prefs--to get the sort of time span you'se obviously get.

Mine go down like a Lizard drinking!

Interesting

If you have bought it as Value added which includes the 3 year warrenty with loan unit if your unit brakes down, then it comes with 2 batteries, nicer casing, PRO software, SanDisk Extreme III card etc etc.
If you bought it as Classic which is only one year repair warranty (no loan unit) then it comes with only one battery, DB software, no CF card etc etc.

I bought a P30 got a loaner P20 with 2000mAh \"noname\" battery. Shouldn't I have gotten a 2500mAh battery along with the back ???

well, I sometimes shoot in the surf with water up to my chest... I wrap my H1+P25 into a cloth + a plastic bag for protection, works well, looks cheap though
