Mamiya ZD or P25/H1

Postby TETI » Tue Aug 16, 2005 12:06 pm

I am about to purchase a Hasselblad H1 with a P25 back. I'm questioning my decision in view of the forthcoming Mamiya ZD. What reasons are there for spending an additional $20,000 (plus) for the P25/H1 route?

Thanks,
John

I'm going this afternoon to buy a P25 for H1, I have the cashier's check in my backpack. I really really wanted the ZD when it was first announced, and especially after I handled the prototype at PhotoExpo. My reasoning for the P25 purchase is this:

-P25 is available now, ZD continues to be vaporware
-P25 has been on the market for a long time, hardware and software are known to be good, any major bugs have been worked out. ZD still completely unknown.
-I feel confident that both Hasselblad and Phase will stay in business, I'm worried about Mamiya
-I can upgrade to 39mp later, with ZD I'm stuck at 22mp
-H1 AF beats the stuffing out of the Mamiya 645, I think the ZD will probably be the same since it uses the same lenses
-H1 has a pop-up flash (I know a lot of ppl scorn them, but I _love_ always having a flash for an emergency)
-I know I can make my money back with the P25, and if I still want a ZD when/if they ship and they really are cheap, maybe I'll get one too ;-)

Thanks Anton. Mark Tucker emailed me with pretty much the same reasoning. I guess two geniuses can't be wrong.

BTW - Where are you purchasing your P25 and if you don't mind - what price were you quoted?
