Phase 645AF and 120mm AF Macro

Postby Gareth » Fri Jan 20, 2012 3:36 pm

I can't decide if to go MF or AF with the macro lens but a deciding factor would be if anyone knows of any issues with the new 120mm AF macro on the 645AF?

My camera is FW 1.5 if that makes any difference.

Gareth,
I regret to inform you that the 645AF Camera does not support the 120AF macro.
This lens is only supported for use on the DF camera body.

Thanks Drew.

That's a shame but does make the decision for me. MF version it will have to be.

Why is there no support with older bodies?

A bit like the promised Schneider leaf lens firmware update that never came for the 645AF. Phase are missing a trick here not updating the last generation camera and should be cashing in on this. I'd buy leaf lenses if supported but as I'm not interested in updating my body until I next update my digital back my money will just have to stay in my bank account rather than yours.

Support for this lens and others would require a whole new firmware and possible hardware upgrade to the, now discontinued, Phase One AF. Our current focus is simply on the DF as it is being developed and fine tuned to work with the IQ units. Sorry for the inconvenience, it would be great to offer the support on the older camera systems but it would simply require more resources than we have available.

Does that mean that todays DF cameras will get obsolete as the technology progresses? That just makes Mamiya/Phase one a bad investment!! Please tell me thats not so as I love the cameras....

To be fair, every piece of technology will become obsolete eventually. With the DF, it was built quickly after the AF as it was clear we could not take the AF in the direction we would like, as fast as we would like. The DF was built to be much more flexible as future products are released and technology advances.
And to address your investment concerns, when the DF was released there was a heavily discounted upgrade path from the AF to ensure our customers retained the high ROI that Phase One promises.
