Free upgrade!!!

Postby RickUrb » Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:06 pm

I purchased C1 4 yesterday online... about 11 hours before the release of C1 5.
I'm hoping to get the upgrade at no charge.
What are my chances?

I upgraded to C1 V4 Pro a month ago and sent a note to Phase one asking about the upgrade policy. The answer was that I would pay.

Hmm.. that is kind of tough..

Maybe they make up their mind.. normally you should get a free upgrade if you purchased it within the last 3 month or so like any other major software is doing.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to reduce or eliminate the $99 upgrade fee
to Capture One 5. We lowered the Price of Version 4 and thus eliminated
the free upgrades. Consequently, there is no grace period.Thank you for
your understanding regarding this matter.

What garbage, they royally screwed up 4.

I normally use Phase one backs so was able to use the DB version from 3 and 4 but had to purchase the pro version just to use my 5DII for smaller jobs. And then, once I purchased it, Pro didn't even support the 5DII tethered for two months into my paying for it.

I always shoot tethered so it was a major hassle for me, and it's not like it was clear when I paid for it, as it did "support" the files but the work around was just silly. Felt screwed from the start.

C1 3 ran flawless and then 4 came along… What a mess and now that we have beta tested their software they want us to pay for a correct and working version.

Just plain rude on their end and I plan on making a stink about it.

That even makes me more mad!

Doesn't customer service and satisfaction mean anything to these people?

To be honest C1 pro 4 was a joke compared to C1 pro3 but still the best capture program on the market.
I am full for upgrade fees as that is the way of how a software can develop only. How shall they be able to pay their developers without?? And come on 99 dollars or 69 euro is nothing for a software upgrade.

But a grace period of at least one month is truly a must.
As version 3 owner i still do not have to pay for an upgrade - in about 4 years. No wander they could not fix things faster.

Be happy that you can get a professional capture tool for just 69 euro in the upgraded version or 299 in the full version wich os also nothing.
I mean a developed 120 film did cost 15 euro including a contact. Each shoot was more expensive than the whole software regarding film. My c1 pro btw did cost 500 euro which is still less than you guys have to pay for an upgrade to C1 pro 5 and C1 6 one day from c1 4.
Really only those who bought c1 4 just à couple days ago got the right to be mad..

I agree that $99 isn't that much for an upgrade but the amount of hassle that 4 users had to go through was just plain stupid. It's down to principle now. Any it also seems as though 5 is still having it's fair share of issues.

4 was also NEVER a fully working version.

It is sadly still the best capture software out there and like my mac I can't work without it (at least at this point but that might have to change if they don't sort it out). This is coming from experience with Flexcolor and lightroom.

The point is that the problems that the software suffers from is just silly, and outright unexceptable.

Running the software on a £3500 computer with 16gb RAM and STILL suffering from crashing and losing files via tethered shooting. What's the point? If this was a software company that wasn't trying to be the best then you could except the failings. But, would any of you put up with these problems in Photoshop?

Of course you wouldn't…

I don't know, but somehow amoung all this templates the only playable is still the Blue One for me. None of the others is very well designed. I don't know how you guys are running through the world, but is it not that some Kind of "style" is à must?? I mean, look at any page of a Major brand like Ikea, Apple, Top Shop, guess etc.. That is a nowadays design...
All the templates designed lately look like they where designed for a hacker movie from the nineties.
I mean, we all try to dress smart and nicely in any kind of style we are running behind, we don't buy even kitchen machines anymore that are not well designed, so why not à template in an actual nowadays design?? Or more ancient like a paperroll or so at least. But honestly.. Its not à crime to use fonts other than the ones my grandmother had on her typing machine or those kids 1997 designed.

I like the blue template the most becouse it is just simple with no try of funkyness like they sell in the C&A stores.

I hope nobody took any of those words offensive as they really are not meant like this.

I agree about all you said on C1pro4
Well, on my computers i had two crashes on the 5er Version in 2 days an 24 hours of Shooting in total. Never had that less on c1 pro 3xx
C1 pro 5 is again à Version i am totally happy with and already prefer it towards even C1pro 3.

If you shoot tethered there always will be crashes as there are to many facts that can cause a breakdown starting from cables to impatient photographers who do not accept the physical limits of the machines or simply assistants who cant handle the workflow.

But thank god at least 4 is history.

I have just installed version 5 and it is much faster and more stable than 4 for me. I was expecting a load of new features but no its pretty much exactly the same bar a few extra things (Focus Mask is nice)

Version 4 was pretty unusable for me, this version should have been a free update as V4 was obviously broken

Aloha!
14 days ago I purchased C14Pro. Today I'm told that in order to get the latest version I must pay an additional $99.00.

Errrrhhhmmm! No - ain't gonna do that.

Take note Phase One - you have my email note requesting a free upgrade. I sent it yesterday evening (HST) and still no response from you!

Almost every software producer I know of including Adobe and Apple, has grace periods of 60-90 days. If you purchase within that timeframe, the update is free. I hope you're listening Phase One ... I am one disappointed user!

So Ante up people!

I would not hold my breath waiting for P1 to change. This is the reply I got from there customer service folks:
Dear

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to lessen the $99 upgrade
charge to Capture One 5 Pro. The $99 upgrade will be remaining in tact.
Thank you for your understanding.

Best Regards
Phase One Marketing

I was in the beginning stages of a purchase of a P1 Digital Back. I phoned the dealer yesterday and said if this is how P1 does business for those like myself and others that have had the software for only a few weeks, then what am I to expect for service on the DB. I let the dealer know that at present I am not interested in the DB until I see an improvement in P1's attitude.
